Food Tour in Athens

We went on a food tour yesterday with Carolina Doriti. She's a pretty famous food writer from Greece here, has a TV show on PBS, has worked with Milk Street, and has her own blog and does food tours like this.

We started off at about 10:30 and ended at 1:30. Through that time, we ate more food than I usually eat in a day, but it all just came in small bites.

We also went to the food market, but she told us it's mostly for tourists right now.

I'm going to try to post links from all the places we stopped, Doreen did a good job at tracking them down.

We started at a yogurt, milk, and cheese bar. She explained the difference between the 2% and the 5% yogurt and why Greek yogurt is different here in Greece than it is in the US.

Then we went to several meat pie places. Again, Carolina described the difference between the different filos which are used to make the meat pies. Phyllo just means dough as far as I can tell.

There is also a pastry shop that seems to specialize in sesame rings.

A very famous chocolate shop. Princess Grace ate here.

A meat and cheese deli. The cured meats here were delicious and there were so many different variety of cheeses I have no idea what was what, but they were all great.

A tiny hole in the wall that was serving pork souvlaki in a pita. No sauce. She said that's the best way to eat it.

Ice cream? You want ice cream?

Finally, iced espresso. Not really my cup of tea, but it was pretty good.
