The Acropolis and the Parthenon
Acropolis means "High City" . The Acropolis is the formation on which the Parthenon is built, which overlooks the city of Athens. It seems that most cities have Acropolai, but not everybody has a Parthenon.
Our hotel room has a beautiful view of the Parthenon, and we've been able to watch it in the morning during sunrise as well as in the evening during sunset. It's quite a view.
As with historic sites all over the world, the Parthenon is swarmed with tourists. They have timed entry now, and over 3,000 people an hour visit the site.
That doesn't make it not worthwhile. You see some amazing things while you're up there. They've been working on renovating the site for something like 50 years now, and it's just getting started.
My brother Mark visited here in the late 60s or early 70s, and he said that back then you were able to just walk into the Parthenon without any how-do-you-do.
The whole place was burned down in something like 450 BC when Athens was attacked, I believe by the Spartans. (You can look that up)
